🌍 1. Cosmic Rebellion (Genesis 3, 6:1–7, 11:1–9)

These three Genesis events mark the triple rebellion:

Genesis 3 – The Serpent’s Deception

  • A divine being (the “nachash,” serpent) entices humanity to rebel.
  • Sets up a false kingdom with rival wisdom and autonomy.
  • A spiritual rebellion in Eden, God’s mountain-garden.

Genesis 6:1–7 – Sons of God and Nephilim

  • Divine beings (bene Elohim) transgress boundaries, produce giants.
  • These beings corrupt humanity with violence and chaos.
  • Jewish tradition locates some of this in Bashan—a known haunt of the Rephaim (giants).

Genesis 11:1–9 – Tower of Babel

  • Human and spiritual rebellion unite again.
  • God responds by dividing nations and assigning them to lesser spiritual beings (see Deut. 32:8–9).

🗺 2. Divine Council and the Allotment of Nations

Deuteronomy 32:8–9 (LXX, DSS reading)

“When the Most High divided the nations, he fixed their borders according to the number of the sons of God. But the LORD’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance.”

  • The nations are placed under the administration of spiritual beings (like princes in Daniel 10), but Yahweh retains Israel.
  • This sets up a map of cosmic conflict: God vs. rebellious principalities.

👑 3. Psalm 82 – God Judges the gods

“God stands in the divine assembly; he judges among the gods… ‘You are gods, sons of the Most High, but you will die like men.’”

  • These elohim (spiritual rulers of the nations) have ruled unjustly.
  • Psalm 82 is a lawsuit scene against these divine rebels.
  • Yahweh declares their coming downfall—and hints at reclaiming the nations.

🏔 4. Bashan – The Mountain of Darkness and Death

Bashan is more than geography—it becomes symbolic of the realm of chaos, death, and demonic opposition.

Why Bashan?

  • Known in the OT as the land of Rephaim (giants, descendants of the Nephilim).
  • King Og of Bashan (Deut. 3) was the last of the Rephaim—his bed measured like a sarcophagus.
  • Psalm 68:15–18 contrasts Bashan (sinister mountain) with Zion (God’s mountain):

“O mountain of God, mountain of Bashan… Why do you look with envy, O many-peaked mountain, at the mount that God desired for his abode?”

  • This hints at a spiritual competition: Zion (God’s holy dwelling) vs. Bashan (rebel ground).

🌀 5. Jesus vs. the Powers (Mark 4:35–41 → Mark 5:1–20)

Now comes the showdown.

Mark 4:35–41 – Jesus Calms the Sea

  • Jesus crosses to the other side—Gentile territory, traditionally under the dominion of other gods.
  • The sea is chaotic, violent—a symbol of Leviathan, spiritual chaos.
  • Jesus rebukes it like a demon. It obeys. Nature itself is under His command.

Mark 5:1–20 / Matt 8 / Luke 8The Demoniac in the Region of the Gerasenes (or Gadarenes)

  • This is Bashan territory—land of the Rephaim.
  • Jesus confronts Legion, a multitude of unclean spirits—a territorial stronghold.
  • The demons beg not to be sent to the Abyss—Jesus has authority to judge them.
  • The pigs (unclean animals in an unclean region) rush into the sea—a visual exorcism of Bashan itself.

🔑 Jesus reclaims spiritual territory by confronting and casting out the powers on their own turf.

🪜 6. Ephesians 4:8–10 – He Ascended After Descending

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives… He also descended into the lower parts of the earth…”

  • Paul quotes Psalm 68—the same psalm that contrasts Bashan with Zion.
  • Jesus descends to the realm of death and ascends victorious, reclaiming what was under the dominion of darkness.
